Animal Welfare Report – March 2022

March 1, 2022

Gavin Goble – General Manager Greyhound Welfare and Re-homing

GAP waiting list

Some of you will be aware that GAP currently has a waiting list (for pre-entry assessments) that is longer than usual. Please see the 18 February Industry Update newsletter   for an explanation as to why this is the case. With the success of recent adoptions, we have just scheduled an extra testing session for 20 greyhounds this week, with the hope we can schedule more in March.

Key points that became obvious from the last-minute scheduling of this extra session:

  • Desexing: because desexed greyhounds on the waiting list are given priority over un-desexed (entire) greyhounds, it is important that GRV has evidence that the surgery has been done. Please do not rely on your veterinarian to send GRV a desexing certificate – get a copy and send it to GRV as soon as possible after surgery so we can update FastTrack and make the greyhound eligible for priority entry.
  • Vaccinations: the vaccination requirements for GAP include an oral or intranasal Kennel Cough vaccine. Unfortunately, some of the greyhounds on the waiting list had received an injectable Kennel Cough vaccine instead, meaning they missed out on one of the new slots.

I strongly recommend that all participants, when getting their greyhounds vaccinated, specifically ask their veterinarian for a C5 that contains an oral or intranasal Kennel Cough vaccine. Not only does it give the greyhound faster and better protection against Kennel Cough (which has obvious benefits), it also means the greyhound is eligible for any last-minute scheduling of extra GAP sessions.

Vaccinations for greyhounds

The Code of Practice requires all greyhounds to have a current C5 vaccination. Please speak to your veterinarian about when your greyhounds are next due for a vaccination and ensure your Kennel Cough vaccine is up to date. These vaccinations are required to keep the Pink Card active (GRV must have copies of certificates). Vaccination requirements for acceptance into GAP are more specific, so please check with GRV if you are planning to get a vaccination for this purpose. Also see https://gap.grv.org.au/about-gap/intake-model/   for the requirements. In addition to recording your greyhound’s adult vaccinations in its Greyhound Record, please also email your vaccination certificates to [email protected] for GRV to upload into FastTrack.
