Ten new Welfare Inspectors have joined Greyhound Racing Victoria’s Welfare Inspectorate, boosting the total number of inspectors in the team to 18.

The new Welfare Inspectors greatly increase the Inspectorate’s capacity to carry out inspections, to ensure compliance with legislation, the State Government’s statement of expectations and Greyhound Racing Victoria’s rules and regulations, and to advise and educate participants about their animal welfare obligations.

GRV General Manager – Animal Welfare Dr Gavin Goble said the new Welfare Inspectors brought with them significant experience and knowledge covering animal welfare, compliance, forensic policing, stakeholder engagement, and other areas.

“I’m delighted to welcome the new Inspectors whose skills and experience will complement those of our current staff in the team,” Dr Goble said.

“We are now well resourced and are committed to ensuring our industry participants are compliant with legislation and the rules of racing that apply across the industry, as well as providing education and information in regards to best practice.

“As we work alongside the many industry participants who do the right thing we hope to continue to build a strong culture where the dogs are always put first,” Dr Goble said.

“This major investment in the Welfare Inspectorate demonstrates that animal welfare is an overriding priority for GRV and participants in Victoria.”

The Inspectors will work closely with Stewards and the Integrity Department and conduct kennel and property inspections across Victoria ensuring that industry participants involved in all stages of the greyhound’s lifecycle are aware of their responsibilities and meet both GRV and other legislative requirements
